Dwight has a BA from the University of Auckland (major in Japanese Literature), a MA in Communication from the University of Hawaii and a Diploma in Communication Policy and Planning from the East-West Centre in Honolulu. His thesis was on: An Emerging Pacific Telecommunity: Communication Policy, Planning and Indicators.
He has taught graduate courses in public relations and communication at Unitec, has lectured at AUT and was a panel presenter at an international United Nations symposium on International Communication in the United States. He also taught Media Studies, English Literature and Presentation Skills at the International Education Centre Tokyo, Japan.
Dwight has a black belt in Aikido and was an instructor for New Zealand Aikikai Federation. He has a passion for tennis and is an interclub player and past president of Karaka Tennis Club and Pompallier Lawn Tennis Club. With his wife he breeds sport horses.
He is one of the founders of the Anti-Bullying Centre Line in the Sand initiative and is a regular media commentator on the subject of bullying. Dwight is also a Mentor for Business Mentors New Zealand, and a Coach for the Lion Foundation Youth Enterprise Scheme. He was also part of Sir Owen Glenn’s Glenn Enquiry into Child Abuse and Domestic Violence in New Zealand.
